Who is Lindy Bearup?
Lindy Bearup is a well-known trauma therapist, consultant, trainer and
group facilitator. She developed Mindful Coalescent Psyche
Therapy / Accelerated Trauma Recovery Mandala Therapy.
The life
journey can be difficult. Lindy's work, life and practice
reflect her strong values around family, equality, respect,
responsibility, spirituality, community and mindful acceptance of
self and all fellow 'travellers'.
Lindy is an experienced therapist with a strong trauma
theoretical framework
underpinning her practice. Working from a trauma
perspective, Lindy views symptoms as windows of
opportunity...not simply as psychopathology. The community
at Moonyah is committed to recovery...not just managing
symptoms. Lindy believes that "the presenting issue is often
a 'flag' for the actual problem."
Lindy’s experience in working with victim/survivors of trauma aftermath, in
a variety of roles spans from 1988 to 2012.
In the mid 90’s, Lindy was invited to the United States by
the keynote speaker at a Trauma and Dissociation conference
in Melbourne, Dr. Benjamin Keyes. She did some of her
university course work in partnership with Bridgewater and
Sandy Brown, M.A., author of Victims of Violence. She
received specialized training in the assessment and
treatment of Complex PTSD & the Dissociative Disorders.
Together with a student chosen from Brazil, she developed a
wholistic understanding of trauma aftermath through
specialized tutoring
on the impact of trauma on the developing brain, body and psyche.
She observed the opening and the initial month of operation
of a twelve month pilot residential programme for
chronically traumatized dissociative women.
Lindy returned to Australia with an increased awareness of
the need for both ‘mindfulness’, and emotional /
physiological arousal based therapeutic interventions.
This awareness has been a driving force in the development
of the mindful coalescent psyche therapeutic work at
Moonyah Counselling.
Lindy’s current roles include trauma therapist, consultant,
facilitator, trainer, advocate, group facilitator, EMDR therapist, mental health
educator, body-centered psycho-therapist, Mindful
Accelerated Trauma Recovery Mandala developer, manager of Moonyah Counselling and sponsor of Survivors of Trauma Support.
In recent years Lindy completed two major projects:
1. The development of a Commonwealth funded mental health
training package in conjunction with her role at ECASA. This training package was designed to
educate mental health professionals about the possible sequelae of childhood trauma (particularly sexual assault)
i.e., complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and the
spectrum of the Dissociative Disorders.
2. The development and facilitation of an accelerated trauma
recovery therapy which has been independently evaluated and
found to be an effective tool in trauma resolution.
Lindy is currently writing a book to showcase right brain creative
therapeutic processes and to provide a
self-help tool for managing and resolving stressful
life situations past and present.
Lindy is committed to journeying with those who want to
understand and overcome the effects of trauma on the whole
self (mind, body, spirit, emotions and actions). She
believes that, in general, mental health treatment has
focused primarily
upon managing symptoms rather than working towards
real recovery from the ongoing impact of trauma. Lindy is continually
upgrading her therapeutic techniques to remain in line with
world cutting edge practice.
